About Târgu Lăpuș
Târgu Lăpuș is a small town in Maramureș County, in the historical region of Transylvania in northern Romania. It is the main centre of Țara Lăpușului (the Land of Lăpuș), an ethnographic region of rolling hills and villages on the upper Lăpuș River, at the foot of the Țibleș Mountains.
Besides the town itself, Târgu Lăpuș administers thirteen component villages: Boiereni, Borcut, Cufoaia, Dămăcușeni, Dobricu Lăpușului, Dumbrava, Fântânele, Groape, Inău, Răzoare, Rogoz, Rohia and Stoiceni. This gives the town an unusually large rural hinterland, where traditional Lăpuș crafts, costume and music remain part of everyday life.
Several of the villages are destinations in their own right. Rohia is home to the Saint Ana Monastery, where the writer and monk Nicolae Steinhardt — author of The Happiness Diary — lived and is buried. Rogoz preserves the UNESCO-listed wooden church of the Holy Archangels, one of the finest of the famous wooden churches of Maramureș, and Stoiceni is the native village of the folk singer Grigore Leșe, whose cultural centre hosts the annual Arminden celebration.
The local calendar is rich in traditional events, from the Horea în Grumaz folk-song festival in October and the winter carol festival in December to the pilgrimage feast of the Rohia monastery on 15 August.
